The Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint in global maritime trade, connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and beyond. Its narrowest navigable channel measures approximately 33 kilometers, with inbound and outbound Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) further narrowing vessel lanes to just a couple of miles each way. Despite these tight constraints, this waterway annually carries an estimated one-fifth of the world’s seaborne crude oil and a significant portion of global LNG cargoes, making it one of the most densely trafficked corridors for tankers and gas carriers globally.

For vessel operators, charterers, the significance of the Strait extends far beyond its raw throughput. There’s no viable alternative route for Gulf-origin cargo, making laycan scheduling, war-risk premiums, and freight rates across the region directly dependent on the conditions in the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz

Given the strait’s pivotal role in daily operations within the region, we sought our CEO, Mohamed’s insights on the challenges and experiences of operating in these waters on a daily basis.

How do you see the current situation affecting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz?

Despite the current circumstances, the Strait of Hormuz remains a vital route for global energy transportation, with a significant share of the world’s oil exports passing through the area. Its importance to international shipping and energy markets remains unchanged.

What should vessels currently inside the Strait be paying particular attention to?
